I need to come up with a category or tag for this distinct brand of special, wherein a black right-wing political pundit is trying so hard to please and appear post-racial that white, right-wing pundits come off as having more sense when it comes to race issues and politics.
Via Media Matters:
“[S]he’s got this Stokely Carmichael-in-a-designer-dress thing going. If she starts talking, as [Townhall Magazine contributor and Weekly Standard contributing blogger] Mary Katharine [Ham] suggested, her instinct is to start with this ‘blame America,’ you know, ‘I’m the victim.’ If that stuff starts to come out, people will go bananas, and she’ll go from being the new Jackie O to being something of an albatross.”
“This Stokely Carmichael-in-a-designer-dress thing going”?
*Headdesk*
Um…yeah…I’m not sure what to do with this one other than to echo Ta-Nehisi Coates: Williams obviously knows next to nothing about either Obama or Carmichael.
H/T Professor Tracey.
As, Nezua pointed out on Twitter, this one is too rich. From an article at The Huffington Post about the increase in racial threats and crimes in the wake of Barack Obama’s election as our new President:
“Potok, who is white, said he believes there is ‘a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them.’”
So, of course, this is all the reason you need to go around attacking black folks.
Oh, the irony, it burns!
This one comes via Jack and Jill Politics:
White Americans have made more moral progress in the last forty years than any people in the history of the human condition.
What is up with you folks named Steele? How do you people come up with this nonsense?
Southern Christian Leadership Conference President, Charles Steele Jr.:
“Why are they attacking Michelle Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, and not really attacking, to that degree, her husband?†Steele asked. “Because he has no slave blood in him. He does not have any slave blood in him, but Michelle does.”
I can barely even comment on this one it’s so mind-bogglingly stupid, but let me see if I get this right:
Barack Obama isn’t Black enough; Michelle Obama is too Black; and none of the attacks on Michelle Obama apparently have anything to do with her being a Black woman.
I didn’t think it was possible to cram so much stupid into two sentences.
