Old School Friday – Songs with Heart

Well, once again it’s Friday and time for some old school. My apologies for the hiatus, but I needed to step away from the tubes for a minute and take care of some of that IRL stuff. Happens. T

This week’s theme is Songs with Heart. I’m kinda mad at Shae for being quick on the draw and beating me to Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.” That was the first song I thought of. Oh well. I guess that means I’ll just have to go and once again drop that dancedy goodness that is Dee-Lite’s “Groove is in the Heart.” I’ll never be able to hear this song again without thinking of Portly Dyke getting her birthday dance on, and that’s a good thing, because either you love PD or you are dumb. I’m just saying. Also, I hereby declare anything that contains Bootsy Collins and Q-Tip as made of win. They could drop a silent joint like Pootie Tang and I’d be dancing my ass off.

It took me quite some time to realize that The Beatles were the shit. I spent many a year being too punk/indie or something to realize that 80% of the bands I loved were ripping them off. Only in the deluded mind of the too hip can Big Star rule and The Beatles suck. Thankfully, one day I found myself grown up.

And last, but not least, here’s a little Neil Young performing “Heart of Gold” live.

Old School Friday – Something Old, Something New

Happy Old School Friday, folks. This weeks theme is Something Old, Something New. It’s funny that this is the theme for this week, because I was just complaining yesterday with BlackAmazon over on Facebook about Scarlet Johannson’s gawd awful cover of Jeff Buckley’s “Last Goodbye.” Really, unless you are as brilliant, if not more brilliant, than the artist whose work you seek to cover (or you’re covering something that was mediocre to crap to begin with), you need to just leave it alone. Some things are sacred.

PETA Continues Their Sharp Decline

That is, if they haven’t already hit rock bottom.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love sex and I love being a vegetarian. I wouldn’t give up either for the world; but this whole using sex women’s bodies to get people men to be vegetarians thing is annoying and stupid and insulting and degrading–to all parties involved. And yes, I really do believe that these ads are all about the menz. Witness the Super Bowl ad that was recently rejected by NBC:

‘Veggie Love’: PETA’s Banned Super Bowl Ad

Not that this point hasn’t been made, oh, about a zillion times.

But I wonder if the folks at PETA understand that they are playing into stupid and stereotypical gender stereotypes by focusing so much of their ad campaigns on men getting laid?

Too Hot for TV: PETA’s Banned Ads

I can’t think of how many times I’ve had conversations similar to this:

Meat Eater: “You’re a vegetarian? So what, did your girlfriend make you?”
Me: “No. Actually my girlfriend eats meat. I was a vegetarian before we even met.”
Meat Eater: “Wait! You’re the vegetarian, and your girlfriend eats meat?!”
Me: “Um, yeah…”
Meat Eater: “That’s fuckin’ weird!”
Me: “Why?”
Meat Eater: “Well, ’cause…y’know…”
Me: *Sigh*

The underlying assumptions behind these ads don’t challenge the status quo. They merely reinforce the tired stereotypes that men, being all “Me horny and me want meat!” won’t become vegetarians unless they’re going to get something out of it–mainly sex–and that only scantily-clad women–unicorn and dolphin loving people that they are (WTF?)–can get men to become vegetarians by either offering sex (but make sure it’s during half-time!) or belittling their “manhood.” Heaven forbid someone becomes a vegetarian because they’ve come to simply believe that eating meat is wrong (or for that matter, for health reasons or they just don’t like meat).

I’ll leave the heteronormativity of all this for another post.

Old School Friday – 2 Hot 4 Radio

Happy Old School Friday! This weeks theme is “Too Hot for Radio.” Now see, folks trying to get me in trouble with my moms or something now! She’s barely gotten over my tendency to drop F-bombs all over the place, and now I’m about to go and post…yeah, how can I not with this theme…”Darlin’ Nikki.”

This isn’t, on the surface, “Too Hot for Radio,” but if you pay very close attention, you’ll find that yeah, maybe it really is. My Bloody Valentine’s “Cigarette in Your Bed.”

Old School Friday – TV Theme Songs

It’s Friday already? Damn. My vacation is almost over. Nonetheless, it’s still Old School Friday and this week’s theme is TV Theme Songs. This one sent me straight back to childhood, and so I give you the Sesame Street theme, as sung by Gladys Knight and the Pips.

And then there was the Muppet Show!

Old School Friday – Blogger’s Choice

Well, well, well…it’s a new year, and what better way to kick if off than with a lil’ Old School Friday goodness! This week’s theme is “Blogger’s Choice,” and I’m going to get funky with some James Brown! This is from 1965, I think. He’s doing the “Night Train Dance.” (Um…Michael who?)

Old School Friday – I Can Drink to This

It’s Old School Friday once again. This weeks theme is “I Can Drink to This.” Well, truth be told, I can drink to just about anything, but this weeks theme instantly made me think of Screaming Jay Hawkins’ “Alligator Wine.”

Amos Milburn is better known for “One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer,” but here’s a tune to remind us that just because you can drink to it, doesn’t mean you should (I’m still working on that one *sigh*). “Bad Bad Whiskey”

And finally, in honor of the legendary Earth Kitt, who passed away yesterday, I give you “Champagne Taste”:
