Heteronimity

I’m annoyed by people that refer to heterosexual, cisgendered people as “straight.”

As opposed to those “crooked” folks?

Really, what’s up with that?

Tell me something good...

  1. I’m actually annoyed by this bit of terminology because I’m heterosexual and cisgendered. “Straight” sounds like “boring and closed-minded” to me. Still, what’s the alternative? There are times I don’t want all the syllables in “heterosexual and cisgendered.”

  2. Aaron explained why I used to use it, and still catch myself ABOUT to use it–I always thought it loosely derived from straitlaced, as in boring, uptight, rigid, predictable.

But I’ve since seen enough people object to it as one of those slurs that really isn’t (because it still sets up het/cis as the norm–straight vs crooked, as you say) that I won’t use it.
