Dear Annoying Ass Facebook.

It’s true. My long-time girlfriend and I have recently broken up. It’s true that I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore by today’s messed up standards of youth and beauty. It’s also true that I have a lot of friends that aren’t black, as am I. This does not mean, however, that I wish to be bombarded, literally ten seconds after I change my status to “single,” with ads for “Hot 30-Plus Singles” and “Interracial Dating.” Of course, I’m not opposed to either. I am 30-plus, and it was an interracial relationship; but for reals, might it ever occur to you and your advertisers that maybe, just maybe, I’m in a period of trying to come to terms with the breakup itself, and I’m not trying to rush out and find that “single mature woman” that you oh so want me to meet right now.

I really just find it annoying. It’s especially annoying that of all the things that can be parsed from my profile, that is what you focus on. You could be selling me CDs, for instance, ’cause I’m a music freak, and I’d probably be more willing to follow a link to potentially good music right now.

And while I’m at it. Why are all of your depictions of interracial relationships between white women and black men? Did I give you that information at some point? Last I checked, interracial relationships were more diverse than that.

I’m just saying.

And yes, that letter to Google Adsense is coming with the quickness. I’m not singling you out.

  1. Sweet Jesus, I hate targeted advertising. I’m not on Facebook, but because of my goofy ISP I often get Adsensed for “hot chicks in Albuquerque,” even though I’m not in Albuquerque and not in the market for hot chicks. (Nothing against hot chicks, but you know? Back off!)

And, totally inadequate, but: I’m sorry about the breakup. Breakups suck, and music is definitely in order to get through one.

  2. Sorry to hear about the break-up.

If you’d like a change in advertising on Facebook, change your gender to female and I promise as a 30-something woman the only thing you’ll see are diet offers. Cause you probably have really low self-esteem and are obsessed with being fat.

    Target marketing — TOTAL awesomeness.

  4. Sorry to hear about the break-up…that sucks…and facebook / adsense / etc. are just gross when it comes to stereotypes. One of the main reasons why I work in higher education and not public relations (what my BA is in) is due to the sludge that advertising creates…
