Republicans are only doing what white people have done since the end of slavery. They have created whiteness as a prize and elevated its social value. This causes poor whites to identify with whiteness rather than class interests. As long as a racial hierarchy exists it gives the rich someone to blame for the social ills and the poor whites someone to look down upon. No one want to be a the bottom of the social ladder.
