Catching Up & Obama Is The Nominee!

So I’ve got some catching up to do. I just finished a long work week (all nights) and haven’t been able to keep up on the convention in real time, but I’ve got opinions, and y’all gonna hear them. Better late than never, y’know?

First off. Hillary Clinton’s speech was phenomenal. Let’s face it, she brought the noise and destroyed the lie that was the “she feels so entitled she’ll destroy the Democratic Party” meme.

Did any of that seem like she was out to destroy any party other than the Republicans? Even if you think it was all staged (and I gotta admit that most of the last two days’ events seemed staged to me), it was staged in the interest of getting Obama elected. Regardless, I feel like Sen. Clinton meant it all. I’ll probably take some heat for saying all of this, but I feel that she handled this whole nomination situation with grace and dignity. Despite all that has gone down, Sen. Clinton deserves her props. Mr. Clinton, not so much (but I haven’t watched his speech yet, so I’ll wait before I talk shit about him some more). I’m just sad that racist asswipes like this probably won’t go away (hat tip Renee).

But enough about the Clintons. I have to put aside my own primary focus on policy, words spoken, and whatnot, and actually look at what I just witnessed happen in these here United States of America.

Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee for President of the United States.

We nominated a Black man y’all! Not about to lie. I’m gonna revel in some serious symbolic, history-has-been-made type shit. I’ve got plenty of time to be cynical and skeptical, but right now, I’m happy as all get out.

Do you get this? A frickin’ Black man is the Democratic Presidential nominee! A Black man, y’all! I’m thinking about my grandmoms and other elders, who never dreamed of seeing this day. This day is for them. This blog post is for them.

One day, folks might see this face on their bills or coins:

The Next US President

The Next US President

This is a moment that I will remember for the rest of my life. As far as I’m concerned, it’s already a national holiday. I’ll be celebrating it every year. Hell, I’m putting in a request for this day off next year tomorrow at work. Do I think we’ve overcome? No. But I do think that we’ve come a long way. Hell Yeah!

This is only the beginning. Wait until us progressives get a say in things. It’ll be on.

  1. I hope you don’t mind, but I used this video (with reference to where I found it, of course) and linked to “A Slant Truth” over at my blog to make a point about the gross misconception of the meaning of the word “madrassa”.
    Thanks for another great post!

  2. like I mentioned in a comment that’s floating somewhere out there in cyberspace….anyone and i do mean anyone who was using Hillary as an excuse not to vote for Barack…doesn’t have a foot, a leg, a cane, stick, crutch, walker or Hillary’s shoulders to stand on…she ROCKED!!

  3. @Morgan: Of course I don’t mind. Spread the good word!

@Roschelle: Thanks! And yeah, Hillary rocked. Some of her so-called supporters (read: Republicans trying to stir up shit) should be ashamed of themselves.
