MTV’s First Political Ad Attacks Obama

Now isn’t this interesting? MTV, which members of my generation and lifestyle inclinations remember as the home of 120 Minutes and Yo! MTV Raps, has aired its first ever political ad. And it’s a conservative, anti-Obama one.

There have been a lot of firsts in the 27-year history of MTV, but beginning Wednesday night (July 23), the channel will begin airing something it never has before: a political advertisement. “Both Ways Barack,” the attack ad from conservative group Let Freedom Ring, takes aim at presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama for what it calls a history of trying to take opposing positions on the same issue.

I don’t watch MTV anymore, but I would think that an ad like this wouldn’t reach their demographic. Is this a sign that conservatives are shitting themselves over their inevitable losses this year and are now trying to reach out to even the most unlikely voters? Or am I missing something about MTV these days? It appears that MTV is considering ads from both parties and candidates, so it’ll be interesting to see if a liberal/Democratic ad follows.

  1. I don’t know anyone over the age of 18 who watches MTV, so though the young republicans, in their call that more hipness and technological savy be part of the campaign maybe should have those in charge this.

  2. It looks like the ads are about to get really ugly. This is part of the reason I sometimes get turned off by politics, even if there is truth to the negative ads.

  3. @Cooper: Yeah, neither do I. I watched about 10 secs. of The Real World a few weeks ago out of curiosity and I couldn’t take it.

@Slim: Man, we haven’t even begun to see the worst of it. I might just have to turn off the TV until November.

  4. I’ve had my television turned off for the past seven days. It has been quite nice! Now I am playing catch up.

There is going to be political blood shedding.

I plan to spend seveal more weeks with the television turned off. Especially is this is the type of ads that will be airing.
