Since You Asked

Got tagged by Joan with the best type of meme you can get tagged with: a music meme! Here are the rules:

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring summer. Post these instructions in your blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to.

I’m gonna take this a little old school. Why? Because I’m old, and all that mess you young’uns listen to these days sucks. :) Y’all know I’m on a mission to remind folks that Hip Hop didn’t always suck, nor does it have to continue to suck, so I will, of course, take this opportunity to highlight seven Hip Hop jams that I’m always enjoying and that won’t make your ears bleed.

Let’s do this.

A Tribe Called Quest, Can I Kick it. I know it’s hard to believe, but there was once a time when Hip Hop was almost universally good. You’d go to a party or a club and they’d be bumpin’ this.

Public Enemy, Brothers Gonna Work It Out. 1990. Again, this used to be the standard. Now, we’ve got Sista Souljah moments and Flava Flav is acting a damn minstrel fool. Seriously, what happened to Flav?

Dilated Peoples, Work The Angles. Another classic summer jam. I remember trying to keep this 12 inch in stock at the record store. Was damn near impossible.

Queen Latifah ft. Monie Love, Ladies First The Queen. ‘Nuff said.

Arrested Development, Tennessee. What’s that I hear? Skills? Lyrics about something other than bling and being hard? Does not compute. Must’ve been the 90s or something.

Roots Manuva, Juggle Tings Proper. UK Cat. Bad ass.

Dj Format, We Know Something. Blackamazon tipped me to this song a few years ago. Big furry animals breakdancing? Love it. Yes, that’s Jurassic 5 in those suits.

I’m never sure who hates memes and who doesn’t these days, so consider yourself tagged if you are so inclined.
