Maybe of interest — and maybe not, lol, but on topic — Pam Spaulding and I had a mini-salon back in 2005 on the subject of the Democrats taking their black constituency for granted, centered largely around LGBTQ rights as a wedge issue. (Which of course has come up again in this election, and Pam’s got another great post, more specific to Obama, up today.)

That salon resulted in a really good discussion at the time, which unfortunately got lost at my place when I switched commenting platforms. Still, I thought you might find the posts interesting, especially Pam’s (and here).

Also, FWIW, the commenter to whom you’re linking is gay. Which doesn’t undermine the point you’re making at all; I only note that because it helps frame his comment.
