Some Folks on Rev. Wright

The responses to the most recent Reverend Jeremiah Wright fauxtroversy have been varied and interesting. Here’s a taste:

Yoabachi thinks that Rev. Wright went too far in his appearance at the National Press Conference

He was unduly flippant, and needlessly sarcastic and patronizing; and this comes from a self-admitted smart-ass. All the smirking and clowning was just way over the top.

And the really sad thing is, up until that point, Wright was winning the media offense. He had well articulated a number of things on three extensive broadcast (2 of which were live); though the media dug out the one or two points to pounce on. Then he acted a fool at the end and gave them tons of ammunition to run amuck with.

DP wonders how much denouncing Obama will have to do before this is all over.

When the sound bites of Rev. Wright’s sermons first hit the airwaves, Obama was pressured to denounce him. He didn’t, instead giving what was universally hailed as a brilliant speech on race, during which he “rejected” his pastor’s words, but refused to denounce the man.

Now with Wright’s little speaking tour (which started out so well on Friday), and especially the National Press Club engagement, Obama has been forced to denounce the man himself, which in turn his opponents are using to question his character. In fact, I’m already hearing the whispers that he didn’t denounce him hard enough to regain his footing in the campaign. You get the picture?

So in order to save some time and aggravation, here’s my list of future denouncements for Barack Obama to make, preferably in one fell swoop. You know it’s coming, so just get it over with already.

Shark-Fu, as usual, cuts through the bullshit and debunks the Acceptable Blackness idea that is oh so obviously behind all this nonsense.

Is this a political story?

Is it really?

Do people honestly believe that Senator Obama believes/supports/embraces everything that comes out of Rev. Wright’s mouth?

Really?

Or is this about that faux perfect acceptably black mask that Senator Obama never put on himself being removed through unfortunate circumstance to display a real person…with real and totally normal Pastor drama…who fumble a bit in dealing with it because it was real and personal and he is human and so, duh, flawed…and what that lack of absolute perfection does to some people’s ability to maintain…oh Gawd, there’s that word again…tolerance?

Head over to their sites and read the full posts. Personally, I’m too tired and disillusioned to say anything of worth right now.

    Thanks for these links, Kevin.

Recently learned a lot I didn’t know about the context for why Wright is a particular target of the religious right from Sara’s ‘What Else Was Going On,’ which breaks out Wright’s role in national politics aside from his connection to Obama. Her specialty at Orcinus and elsewhere is this spy-hopping of the specifically religious right - it was a useful reminder for me to think about him in that larger context of Liberation Theology remaining a deeply threatening activist current a lot of institutions have been invested in squashing from the start.

Anyway. I hope the tired disillusion gets a break today. With chocolate or something.

Nice summary Kev, and thanks for the link. This Rev. Wright issue is just so much nonsense that is doing nothing but keeping the issues off the agenda.
