Tha Hell?

So, I’m fooling around with the blog, trying to clean some things up, maybe add a snazzy web 2.0 feature here or there, and I notice the Google Ad currently showing up on my blog. It’s a block ad for John McCain for President. In what universe is it possible for Google’s programs to do whatever it is they do and come to the conclusion that a John McCain ad would fit nicely on this blog? This one, I suppose, but that doesn’t mean I have to willingly put up with it. I shudder now at the thought of what other ads may have popped up here during my absence or when I just wasn’t paying attention. It’s nice to get a little extra help with the web hosting and all, but not at the expense of appearing to support people, ideas or programs that I oppose. So, goodbye Google ads. Don’t let the door hitcha…

If you still want the ads, you can filter them. Google lets you specify ads you don’t want on your page (i.e. to filter out ads from competitors).

I removed Google Ads after an ad for “Indian Costumes” appeared on one of my posts on Chief Illiniwek at UIUC :(

I used text link ad for awhile and you get to choose, google doesn’t like them and zaps your page rank but I was making more than enough to host fifteen blogs with what I was getting a month from them even after a short time. The in post tla was pretty sweet. I never saw them.

I got rid of my google ads too. Firstly, because they weren’t making any money for some reason (my fault probably because I don’t really understand how to use them). And secondly, because of getting ads that I really couldn’t condone. Has anyone got any ideas for making a little bit of cash without selling out ? I keep looking but apart from TLA, I can’t find anything that works. Also my TLA ads are great and make regular money but I can’t seem to attract more than the two links I have. Any ideas ?

Codegirl - yeah, I thought about that, but it seems like an awful lot of trouble for my meager blog, which wasn’t earning that much from Google Ads anyway. I feel like now that I’m paying more attention, it would be this never ending “oh crap! I can’t believe this is on my blog” thing.

Eric - My point exactly. I now wonder what other ads that I would never approve have appeared on here.

Cooper and DD - I’m using Text Link Ads now. I like the fact that you can choose which ads appear on your site. I can see why Google wouldn’t like them, but oh well. There’s a large enough percentage of people coming here through questionable Google searches that I’m really not all that concerned about page rank.

I really have no ideas as far as monetizing your blog more. There are several liberal ad networks out there, but they all seem to be “you need to know someone in the know” type affairs.
