PortlyDyke, from the always excellent Shakespeare’s Sister, brings it:
Sphere: Related ContentYes, I think that racism, misogyny, and homophobia (and whole bunch of other hatred-based “isms”) are interconnected. Yes, I think that it’s important for me to “connect-the-dots” between these forms of oppression, and understand how they intertwine.
However, I think that if I’m really going to understand that tapestry of hate, and learn how to untangle it — there will be times when I must look carefully, and talk long into the night, about the specific threads which don’t touch me in the same way that they touch others who on the “magical oppression carpet-ride” with me. (Wheee! Are we fucking having fun yet? No. I thought not.)

hi tbd. i came here from shakesville, and i see what pd likes about your site. i live and work in probably the least racist place in the universe, the university of michigan in ann arbor. the work force here completely mirrors the community, and due to very aggressive afirmative action policies that have only recently been scaled back due to losing a law suit and a referendum. i can look up and down the hierarchy, and see a rainbow either way. i think examining what people who are confronting racism effectively are doing is a good idea. the university has a department devoted to bringing cultural understanding to our commuunity. there are posters and displays and seminars featuring every culture you can imagine. they have a comming out celebration each year. they provide translators for every major language as well as some pretty obscure ones. there are plenty of black and brown doctors, department heads, and nurses and lots of white people washing floors, etc. the worst area is nursing. still 90% women. it’s not perfect, but after a trip down to louisianna with the red cross after katrina it was quite shocking to see how far behind the rest of the country is.
Yikes, bro, that discussion at Shakes got mighty whitey! Including a white person instructing you on how to fight racism, hehe.
Leann, just so you know, I’ve spoken with people of color at UMich who consider Ann Arbor to be insufferably racist in that liberal self-congratulatory way. Just sayin. Least racist place in the universe? Hmmmm….how about within progressive communities of color? Do we count?
Peace.
Hi, Leann. Thanks for stopping by.
I agree with Kai here. I don’t know anyone at UMich, but I’m suspicious of claims of “least racist place in the universe,” especially within the context of the U.S. “North” vs. “south.” I don’t doubt that there is a lot of good, progressive, anti-racist activity going on there, but I’m uncomfortable with claims of “look at how bad it is in the south compared to here.” I think that racism just rears its ugly head in different ways.
Anyway, you might want to take a look at the Facing South blog for a good look at the progressive South.
Again, thanks for stopping by, and I hope you return.
And yeah, Kai, I was happy for the post and the mostly good conversation, but some of those comments? Ugh! I’m so sick of the “if you PoC would just stop being so angry” narrative.
